The purpose of a Supported Internship is for the student to learn a job role until they are able to carry out all tasks independently and the employer then offers them a paid position. Students spends at least 16 hours a week with the employer with the support of a Job Coach. Their role is to provide the right amount of preparation and support to both the student and employer.
This support is then reduced over time as the student becomes competent and confident in the role. A Supported Internship lasts between 6 months and 12 months, at which point the job offer is made.
Once the student moves into paid work, their time at the college comes to an end, however, college staff continue to offer support for 3 years to ensure that employment is sustained.

Examples;
Anthony will be starting a Supported Internship with Birmingham Council in December 2020. He will be providing administration support for a new team that work to support care leavers. He is really looking forward to this new challenge and hopes it will lead to an offer of paid work in the future.
